Michelle Malkin, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Arabs. Oh My!
What do you see in the above picture? I see Rachael Ray holding a cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee with pretty cherry blossoms in the background.
What does conservative commentator Michelle Malkin see in the above picture? She complained of how the scarf looks like the kaffiyeh; a traditional Arab headdress. Combine this with other complaints of how the kaffiyeh symbolizes Muslim extremism, and Dunkin’ Donuts pulled the online ad. Malkin pined that the kaffiyeh “has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yassar Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant (and not-so-ignorant) fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons.”
Seriously, Meesh?
Let’s talk about ignorance. Have you ever visited the Middle East? I assume not after reading your ridiculous op-ed. If any legitimate research was involved during the formation of your article, you would have easily discovered that the kaffiyeh is worn daily to school, work, and to keep warm. It is a common article of clothing in the Middle East. Solely associating the kaffiyeh with terrorism dangerously perpetuates the American stereotype of Arab culture.
Your absurd op-ed is evidence of why the international community labels us as ignorant of other cultures.
Besides, it’s totally paisley.
