President Obama/VP Clinton: A change I can believe in.
President Obama and Vice President Clinton would marry style with substance, ideas with experience, and inspiration with dedication.
The past 16 months have seen my senses accosted by the promise of change. My point of contention with Obama’s campaign has always been the lack of higher-level ingenuity in the policy arena to symbolize this change. Sure, green jobs, improved financial assistance for college students, and tax cuts are great ideas. However, if Obama is willing to stake his candidacy on change he must back it up with something that fundamentally challenges our antiquated way of thinking. To me, offering the VP role to Hillary Clinton is a novel idea.
In the end, this is not about power; it’s about legacy. Barack Obama is representing a new generation of Americans who truly believe that change is within reach. He is openly challenging the bureaucratic and political norm; a notable achievement regardless of who eventually wins the presidency. Hillary Clinton knows she may not be the first female president, but she could certainly be one of the most influential women in our nation’s history. Can you imagine this duo tackling the issue of broken healthcare? Who would be better suited to lead the charge? Although universal healthcare may not happen in four years, it could certainly happen in eight.
I believe that Dick Cheney has effectively redefined the role of the Vice President. Despite his shortcomings, a precedent now exists with the potential to transform future presidential administrations. Not a co-presidency, but an executive branch that matches Presidential initiatives with Vice Presidential implementation. After all, the biggest criticism of our government is the lack of significant and meaningful outputs necessary to move this country in the right direction. It is time for a VP who fights for a President’s initiatives and sees them to fruition.
Good leaders know when to table their desires for the greater good while smart leaders recognize how a marriage of two strengths can produce one unstoppable force. The Obama/Clinton ticket represents the “out-of-the-box” thinking this nation needs to free itself from eight years of incompetence. It is change embodied.
Most importantly, it is a change that I can believe in.
